Why was Fight Back NY created?

The defeat of the marriage equality bill in 2009 by the New York State Senate has demonstrated to us that there are many senators who do not represent the values of New Yorkers and who must be held accountable for their actions. The LGBT community is ratcheting up the political pressure to take out New York State Senators who voted “no” and replace them with new senators who have publicly stated that he or she supports equality.

Who organized Fight Back New York?

Committed donors and activists conceived of the effort and are getting it off the ground. All donors to the committee will be fully disclosed on campaign finance reports filed with the New York State Board of Elections.

Is this a Democratic or Republican group?

Fight Back New York is nonpartisan. Its targets will be both Democrats and Republicans.

What activities will Fight Back New York undertake?

We will be speaking to voters directly through mail and other media, phones, and e-mail. We will be raising money to support aggressive independent expenditures in each of our target districts.

Will Fight Back New York go after all 38 senators who voted ‘no’ on the marriage equality bill?

While we hope to change the hearts and minds of all 38 senators who voted ‘no’, Fight Back New York will be deliberate and strategic in targeting its resources to elect a pro-equality state senate.

Will Fight Back New York also support senators who voted ‘yes’ on marriage equality?

Fight Back New York encourages donors and activists to support the senators who voted yes. The committee will be working primarily to defeat anti-equality senators.

Is Fight Back New York going to evolve into a new gay advocacy group in New York?

No.  The Fight Back New York is a single-purpose entity that hopes to go out of business on November 3, 2010. Fight Back New York supports the Empire State Pride Agenda as the leading LGBT advocacy organization in the state. To learn more about their work please go to www.prideagenda.org.
