IT IS ON...WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Can you feel it? We’re on the verge of a big win in New York. All of the momentum right now is in our favor. Since we last wrote you, the state assembly has passed the marriage bill and five new state senators have voiced their support. Two of these supporters—Jim Alesi and Roy McDonald—are the first Republican senators in New York to publicly support the freedom to marry.
Know that the work that you did last year played a huge role in getting these new supporters.
We won’t get into the weeds of the end-of-session politics in Albany, but we’re now basically waiting for resolution on a couple of other bills before the marriage bill is brought to the floor. Once that happens, we expect that Majority Leader Dean Skelos will allow a vote of conscience in the state senate, where we need just one more vote to win.
We know that vote—and likely more—exists. We need you to help us secure these last few votes by staying plugged in during these final hours of the New York marriage campaign. You can help us now by:
- Calling your state senator: We need the supportive calls to keep flowing into the offices of state senators. You can call your senator here. Keep the call respectful and brief, but them know that you are paying attention to their vote.
- Donating to New Yorkers United for Marriage: The coalition continues to run an effective TV ad campaign, focusing mostly on the Albany market while the legislature is in session. Additionally, field organizers continue to do great work drumming up support in key districts. These tools need funding, and any amount you can give will help.
With your help, we’re confident that we will have something big to celebrate by the end of the week. And we want you to know that we’re not leaving Albany until we get this done. Like we said in our note last week, we’re at the eleventh hour—stay in this with us until we cross the finish line.
Thanks, as always, for your support and dedication.
